His Dark Materials casting and Hollywood big budget ennui
Production on The Golden Compass, the first instalment of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, begins in September. The casting of the major characters seems to be complete; Nicole Kidman is to play the elegantly evil Mrs Coulter, raven-haired Eva Green will play witch queen Serafina Pekkala whilst Paul Bettany will play Lord Asriel. A surprising choice as I always envisioned Asriel as being more manly than I believe Bettany is capable of (Christopher Ecclestone would win my vote). However, here’s hoping he will surprise. Unknown Dakota Blue Richards, an English schoogirl, will play the lead role of Lyra Belacqua.
Bush (and Blair) on the brain
Just a quick one… it’s late and I’ve still got some pieces to churn out, so I can get a head start on my Blair / Bush relationship research tomorrow. Yep, it’s three days into my work experience placement at a national Sunday paper… and I am up to my eyeballs in it. Though thoroughly enjoying the experience.
After all, it’s not often when you overhear a workplace telephone conversation (between an editor and a Middle East-based correspondent) end with “Right, give me a call back when you sort out the problems with your armoured vehicle.”
And now I can also tick off my ‘Life – to do’ list, the box marked ‘Call the White House Press Office and be stonewalled all afternoon’. The final upshot: after pestering them for the umpteenth time, I was told emphatically that the White House did not have the information I was after.
Le postscriptum – Zizou: ‘Je regrette pas’
The long awaited interview with the man whose actions mystified the globe, left the lipreading profession in disarray and reignited the popularity of ‘yo mamma’ jokes, has left us none the wiser.
A contrite (and very handsome) Zinédine Zidane, speaking on France’s Canal television last night, apologised for his chest-butt, particularly to the children and stated that he would rather have suffered a blow to the jaw than have heard Materazzi’s words. But he did not reveal the Italian’s specific words.
The outcome of the FIFA investigation may reveal the exact words which passed between the two men that night. (Anyone inclined to pore over FIFA’s 90 page disciplinary code can do so here).
But does it matter?

Plastic Bag – the Redux
Just a brief revisit to this topic, Coincidentally, it seems Ikea have just decided to impose a plastic bag charge of 5p, which will rise to 10p a bag later this year. Go you good Swedish thing. The Observer story can be found here [ ].
I found my thrill…
More Wong Kar Wai (slightly outdated) news.
His first English language film will be called My Blueberry Nights. Norah Jones and Broadway actress Adriane Lenox have been cast as waitresses. Apparently, the film concerns a young woman journeying across the United States to find the true meaning of love. While doing so, in a mind-bogglingly obvious plotline, she meets various quirky characters, who will no doubt help her along to her goal. (*barf*)
