  • august: osage county (writer: tracy letts; steppenwolf company; national theatre, london; 2008 ) with most people’s schedules featuring upcoming family gatherings and their usual personality clashes, eccentricities, arguments, here is potent reminder that no family is quite as dysfunctional as tracey letts’ westons.  Painful, hilarious and utterly compelling.

  • press gang (steven moffat, uk, 1989-1993)
  • waiting for godot (samuel beckett; dir. peter hall, the new ambassadors, london) a play where, as one irish critic said, ‘nothing happens, twice’. the first act with its reams of spittle and gasping, tortured lucky was quite grotesque but the lyricism of the words still compels. absurd, existentialist and moving.
  • black books (feat. dylan moran, bill bailey, tamsin greig, uk, 2000-2004) drunken grumpy ramblings, rants and wackiness from dysfunctional characters, set in a dishevelled bloomsbury bookshop.
